The Night House movie review & film summary 2021

the night house

It’s so vulnerable and exposed, in a way that understands Beth’s teetering on a blade’s edge and how that’s a common state of emotional decay. Rebecca Hall stars as the widowed Beth, left grieving after their husband Owen (Evan Jonigkeit) shoots himself in the head while adrift on lake waters. Beth is experiencing the indescribably hollow period of loss where everything seems surreal; the house Owen built is now an empty reminder. She medicates with brandy most nights and begins sleepwalking as Owen once did—then she hears Owen’s voice and feels a nightly presence. Clues start to inspire hope that Owen has returned, but further interactions cause Beth to investigate her partner’s private affairs and spiral as Owen may have been leading a double-life behind closed doors.

She begins to suffer from strange supernatural events at night and finds a strange reversed floor plan for their house. When a bipartisan border and national security bill negotiated in the Senate collapsed, Schumer proceeded to move forward with a vote on the foreign aid bill up for a vote. It passed overwhelmingly in a vote in February, but had no clear path forward in the Republican-controlled House, where the new speaker, Mike Johnson, dithered as Ukraine suffered battlefield losses. In a move to bolster Republican support, the GOP-controlled House added a provision that would see TikTok blocked in the US unless its Chinese-owned parent company divests from the social media platform within a year.

In 2020, Trump won college-educated white men by 3 points in 2020, according to exit polls, but the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll showed Biden winning the group by more than 20 points. The Blue Wall states are home to significant shares of white, working-class voters, but Biden has retained strong support with unions. Democrats are also putting in significant efforts, especially in Wisconsin, to reach Black voters and be on college campuses. All three states have significant Black populations and multiple colleges and universities. That's only slightly behind what they're spending in Michigan.

Led by a stellar performance from Rebecca Hall as a woman reeling from the loss of her husband, the film has an eerie, metaphysical bent and an occasionally dreamlike feel, as it captures the slow unraveling of a grief-stricken mind. A tension enters The Night House’s home stretch as the demands of the genre start to eat away at the ambiguity — at least up to a point. The film fully reveals what Owen was up to prior to his death, but what accompanies that revelation, particularly its connection to Beth’s past, can be read a couple of different ways, and the film smartly refuses to tell viewers what to think. Though the final moments are sure to frustrate viewers uncomfortable with unanswered questions, the grayness suits the subject. Sometimes it isn’t just the houses that are haunted, the people within their walls are too. Some ghosts can’t easily be pushed out or explained away.

I think there’s an entire read of the movie that is just about Beth’s psychological breakdown and coming out on the other side and processing that. The month ahead will bring new films from Alex Garland, Luca Guadagnino, Dev Patel, and more. The bill easily cleared a key procedural hurdle earlier in the day. The Senate overwhelmingly voted to advance the measure in a step hailed by the majority leader as “one of the greatest achievements the Senate has faced in years”. "I would be very surprised if we have a turnout rate like we saw in 2020," McDonald said. "And the people who would most likely then not participate ... are going to be these lower-education voters. And so it's going to pose a real challenge to the Trump campaign, to energize these folks yet again to vote in 2020." It focuses on the states that are expected to be most competitive in the effort by the campaigns to get to 270 electoral votes, a majority of the 538 total available. Reality and the supernatural mix and Hall is intense and committed and carries you through a movie that will scare you senseless and also disorient as it layers on the secrets and proceeds to its strange, ambiguous conclusion.

In Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, Biden has caught up, pulled even or taken a lead in some recent surveys. And Pennsylvania happens to be where Biden and allies are spending the second-most on ads right now — almost $4 million in the past month and a half since Super Tuesday, the unofficial start to the general election. He's qualified so far for the ballot in three states — Michigan, Hawaii and Utah. A Quinnipiac poll last month showed Trump's lead expanding from 3 to 5 points when RFK Jr. was included. Kennedy's campaign and a super PAC supporting him say he has enough signatures to potentially also get on ballots in Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina and South Carolina.

There has only been one Electoral Vote tie in U.S. history — it happened in the election of 1800. Texas is a majority-minority state, but remains something of a white whale in Democratic politics. In 2020, it was the closest it has been since 1996, decided by 7 points. But with other paths to 270 and how expensive Texas is to advertise and organize in, expect the core seven states to be the focus. Latinos, Black voters and young voters all view the economy negatively. Majorities overall disapprove of Biden's handling of the economy and more voters say they think the economy was better under Trump.

Madelyne arrives and tells Beth how Owen invited her to the reverse house. When Owen kissed her, he attempted to choke her, but apologized after she panicked and drove her back home. A drunk Beth visits the reverse house, and under the floorboards finds the bodies of the women Owen had photographed.

Before long, Beth’s days and nights start to blend together, and become connected by haunting dreams and visions of a secret world Owen built and kept out of view. Understand, The Night House isn’t The Dark And The Wicked in terms of apparitional terrors—but jump scares aren’t the only weapon in horror’s arsenal. David Bruckner basks under the poetic allure of moonlight for a genre experience that dedicates its fear to commonplace mental anguish.

However, what truly sells this mystery is the film’s use of negative space. Bruckner and cinematographer Elisha Christian make emptiness feel aggressive, and almost dangerous. They create alternating pools of light and darkness as Beth moves about her house, and they frame pillars and household objects in ways that play tricks on the mind. Their unusual use of focus also makes the eye wander towards empty parts of the frame that only make sense if there’s someone standing there.

After a night out with Claire, a drunken Beth reveals that she had been clinically dead for four minutes after a car accident years ago and saw that there was nothing when she died. Owen had always disagreed with this and was close to changing her mind before he died. Beth says that when she suffered from depression a year ago, Owen began sleepwalking, and she thought she had passed her negative emotions to him. That night, she is awakened by a supernatural presence and witnesses several frightened women fleeing through the woods and jumping into the lake.

I'm pretty sure that I get it, but I’m not fully convinced everything lines up. The Night House is a 2020 supernatural psychological horror film directed by David Bruckner and written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. It stars Rebecca Hall as a widow who discovers a dark secret about the house her recently deceased architect husband built. Other cast members are Sarah Goldberg, Evan Jonigkeit, Stacy Martin, and Vondie Curtis-Hall. Among them was Lindsey Graham, a longtime defense hawk who previously opposed the Senate’s foreign aid package because it wasn’t paired with border legislation but on Tuesday voted to advance it. After a visit to Ukraine earlier this year, Graham endorsed Trump’s loan plan and has since pointed to Iran’s aerial attack on Israel as a reason send aid to the country.

And then when it came to the day it was very much like okay so now’s the scene where you make out with the ghost…and, uh, what are you going to do, Rebecca? Well, I’m going to make a fool of myself in front of all these people is what I’m going to do! And I’m going to try to be brave and not care about it! [Laughs] I’m making a sort of crass joke about it but there was something really liberating about that because David [Bruckner] did trust me to just...physically embody what was happening.
