Windows 7 Professional, the middle class of the Windows versions, will run you approximately $299 for a full version, and $199 for an upgrade. As previously mentioned, Professional adds XP Mode, Domain Join, and network backup upgrades from Home Basic. Home Premium retails for around $199 full version and $119 upgrade version. Microsoft recommends Home Premium for the most basic computer users, who use their computers to do common things such as email, surf the web, edit documents, etc. Any edition of Windows 7 can be installed onto a VHD volume; these installations even appear in the boot menu. An in-place install (labelled "Upgrade" in the installer), where settings and programs are preserved from an older version of Windows.
Devices and Printers is a new Control Panel interface that is directly accessible from the Start menu. For example, an external monitor connected to the system will be displayed as a device, but the internal monitor on a laptop will not. It’s quite clear that many of the “high end” features that the more expensive versions of Windows offer, can easily be replaced by just as good freeware apps. Because Windows 7 Ultimate is the highest version, there’s no upgrade to compare it to. Logically Windows 7 Professional should be slower than Windows 7 Home Premium because it has more features to take up system resources. However, one might expect someone spending more on an operating system to spend more on hardware so that you can reach a neutral situation as Ben suggests. You will be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, the Ultimate edition does not exist in the Windows 10 family. For instance, if you are using Windows 7 Home Premium, you’ll upgrade to Windows 10 Home.
This option is only sometimes available, depending on the editions of Windows being used, and is not available at all unless upgrading from Windows Vista. Windows Explorer in Windows 7 supports Libraries, which are virtual folders that aggregate content from various locations and present them in a unified view. Searching in a library automatically federates the query to the remote systems, in addition to searching on the local system, so that files on the remote systems are also searched.

The taskbar is 10 pixels taller than in Windows Vista to accommodate touch screen input and a new larger default icon size. Running applications are denoted by a border frame around the icon. Freeware apps are what they are and they are not built-in to Windows. If you believe that you will use several of the features that Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate offer, and want to use Microsoft programs, go for the upgrade. If you don’t care if you use freeware, you can make Windows 7 Home Premium do just about everything Windows 7 Ultimate can do, and save yourself $120.
Featuring the first graphical user interface for IBM-compatible PCs, the Windows OS soon dominated the PC market. Windows 7 can still be installed and activated after end of support; however, it will be more vulnerable to security risks and viruses due to the lack of security updates. After January 14, 2020, Microsoft strongly recommends that you use Windows 10 instead of Windows 7. BitLocker brings encryption support to removable disks such as USB drives.

Some Windows Aero options are excluded along with several new features. This edition is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions and supports up to 8 GB of RAM. Home Basic, along with other editions sold in emerging markets, includes geographical activation restriction, which requires users to activate Windows within a certain region or country. Microsoft still supports in-place upgrades from a lower edition of Windows 7 to a higher one, using the Windows Anytime Upgrade tool. There are no family pack versions of the Anytime Upgrade editions. It was possible to use the Product Key from a Standard upgrade edition to accomplish an in-place upgrade (e.g. Home Premium to Ultimate).
Professional and Enterprise volume licensed editions have paid Extended Security Updates available until at most January 10, 2023. Since October 31, 2013, Windows 7 is no longer available in retail, except for remaining stocks of the preinstalled Professional edition, which was officially discontinued on October 31, 2016. There are two major new user interface components for device management in Windows 7, "Devices and Printers" and "Device Stage". The difference between these SKUs and full SKUs of Windows 7 is their lower price and proof of license ownership of a qualifying previous version of Windows. Same restrictions on in-place upgrading applies to these SKUs as well. In addition, Windows 7 is available as a Family Pack upgrade edition in certain markets, to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium only. It gives licenses to upgrade three machines from Vista or Windows XP to the Windows 7 Home Premium edition. These are not full versions, so each machine to be upgraded must have one of these qualifying previous versions of Windows for them to work.
Similar to the other Windows operating systems, the company launched editions or a variety of the operating system with limited or additional features. These variations all come for different prices and allow users to spend only on the features that are bound to use, with the other features reserved for professionals. This is done to ensure that each user will only have to pay for the features that he/she requires. Windows 7 Home Premium and Ultimate are two different versions of Windows 7 that is available in the market. The Home Premium version is the main version that is available for home users and has placed more focus on entertainment and aesthetic appeal.
This is another feature that can be replaced using several of the great freeware apps out there. If you are planning on using this a feature like this at the office, take into consideration that most businesses do not use Windows backup. Windows 7 is also currently available in two distinct forms of Windows Embedded, named as Windows Embedded Standard 7 and Windows Embedded POSReady 7. Both versions are eligible for Extended Security Updates for up to 3 years after their end of extended support dates. In addition, binary identical for Embedded Systems variants of Professional and Ultimate editions are also available, differing only in licensing, and with their support periods also matching their non FES variants.
The search box, first introduced with Windows Vista, has been extended to support searching Control Panel items. A "Devices and Printers" option has been added that displays a new device manager. The Classic version of the Start menu from Windows 95 is no longer available. That's actually something I could use (I have some programs for school that doesn't work with 7).
